# Messages

> Start a conversation with another participant from their profile or a meeting, send text and files, and follow unread and read status in the Messages tab.

**Messages** is one-to-one messaging with other participants of the event. The tab appears once you have joined, in every event regardless of plan. The host's participant type rules decide who you can write to, so the **Message** button appears only on profiles you're allowed to contact.

<Note>
  A conversation you have already started stays open even if the host changes
  the rules later. It remains in **Messages** after the **Message** button
  disappears from that participant's profile.
</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a conversation">
    Open the participant's profile from [**Participants**](/participant/directory) and select **Message**. The same button is in a meeting's details next to **View profile**, and on the next-meeting card on the event home. In Chat plan events, **Message** is the main button on every profile you can contact.

    The conversation is created for both of you when you send the first message.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Write and send">
    Type in **Write a message** and press Enter or select **Send**. A message holds up to 2,000 characters. Beyond that, **The message is too long (2,000 characters max).** appears above the field and **Send** stays disabled until you shorten it.

    To attach files, select **Attach file**, drop them onto the field, or paste an image. Each message takes up to 5 files of 4 MB each: images in JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF, and PDF, Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents. Files upload when you select **Send**, and you can remove one before that.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Follow unread and read status">
    Conversations with new messages show the name in bold and an unread count. The total of unread messages appears as the badge on the **Messages** tab and, on wide screens, on the **Messages** card in the right rail. A conversation is marked read while you have it open in a visible window. Under your last message the other participant has read, **Read** appears with the time.

    New messages arrive without reloading the page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Go back in a conversation">
    Select **Load earlier messages** at the top, and **Scroll to latest** to return to the newest one. Times in **Messages** follow your device's time zone, with **Yesterday** and dates for older days.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## After the event

Messaging stays open after the event ends and after meeting requests close. Confirmed meetings, their details, and your profile stay as well.

## Troubleshooting

  <Accordion title="There is no Message button on a profile">
    The host's participant type rules don't allow messages between your
    participant type and theirs. If you messaged each other before the rules
    changed, the conversation is still in **Messages**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The message field is disabled in an open conversation">
    The other participant is no longer an approved participant of the event. The
    line above the field says so, and earlier messages stay readable.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A file was rejected">
    The accepted formats are images in JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF and PDF, Word,
    Excel, or PowerPoint documents, each up to 4 MB, with up to 5 files per
    message. Convert or shrink the file and attach it again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A message won't send">
    **Couldn't send the message. Please try again.** means the message wasn't
    sent. **This participant can't receive messages right now.** means the
    message was refused on the other side. The conversation remains readable.
