# Members and roles

> Invite people to your organization from Members, see what admins and members can do, and resend or cancel invitations, change roles, and remove members.

**Members** lists everyone in your organization together with pending invitations. Every member can open it. Inviting, changing roles, and removing are admin actions.

  Only admins see **Invite member** and the row menu. An organization has two
  roles, admin and member. The person who created the organization is its first
  admin, and the organization keeps at least one admin at all times.

  <Step title="Open the invite dialog">
    In **Members**, select **Invite member**. The heading counts current members
    and pending invitations together.

  <Step title="Enter the email and role">
    Fill in **Email** and choose a **Role**; member is preselected. Select
    **Send invitation**. The toast reads **Invitation sent**, and the person
    appears in the list as **Invited**.

  <Step title="The invitee joins">
    The email links to a page that names your organization and the invited
    address. The invitee selects **Continue**, types the code on the **Enter
    code** screen, adds their name if asked, and lands in the console. If
    they're already signed in with that address, **Join now** joins in one step.
    If they're signed in with a different account, a warning says that
    continuing switches them to the invited account. Once they join, the row
    shows **Active**.

## What each role can do

## Status and row actions

Each row carries **Active**, **Inactive**, or **Invited**. An inactive member stays in the list but can't open the organization. Admins open the menu at the end of a row.

| **Resend invitation** | **Resend invitation?** names the address. A new email with a new link goes out, and the earlier link stops working. | **Invitation resent** |
| **Cancel invitation** | **Cancel invitation?** says the link will no longer work. **Keep invitation** closes the dialog. | **Invitation canceled** |

## Last admin protection

* While you're the only admin, **Change role** keeps the other roles disabled on your row. If the change is attempted anyway, the dialog reads **Add another admin before changing your role.** Make someone else an admin first.
* If two admins demote or remove each other at the same time and no admin would be left, the later change is undone. The dialog shows **No admins would be left, so the change was undone.** and the list reloads.
* You can't remove your own membership. Ask another admin.

## After a member is removed

The person loses access right away. An open console session for this organization ends with **Your session expired. Sign in again.** At their next sign-in they see their other organizations or, with none left, the screen to create a new one.

## Troubleshooting

    Check the list. For an **Invited** row, use **Resend invitation**. If the
    row is **Active**, the person is already in.

  <Accordion title="The invitee sees Invitation unavailable">
    The link has expired, was canceled, or was already accepted, and the page
    says which. **Resend invitation** sends a fresh link for a pending
    invitation, and **Invite member** starts over after a cancellation. An
    accepted invitation needs only a sign-in.

  <Accordion title="Change role is disabled on my own row">
    You're the only admin. Give another member the admin role, then change
    yours.
